Better jump photo and Bear update

Since we had a 1 day break in the weather and it was in the 50’s instead of the 30’s, I decided to take another shot at the “freeze action” challenge. I am VERY pleased with how this came out!!

Jump - much improved! A52

I used a faster shutter speed for this than the previous shot. I could have gone faster, but didn’t like the grain it added. I also leaned a yardstick against the center of the bars so I would have something definite to focus on (worked like a charm)! And I used a tripod so I could keep consistent focus. I had to use manual focus because the slight delay of the auto focus for a shot like this just adds to the timing difficulty 🙂 It took several shots to get this, but Dazzle loves to jump so he didn’t mind. I spread the bars more than usual to try to get more air time.

BEAR UPDATE:
Bear continues to do well after his eye removal. Only trouble is depth perception for jumping on/off the couch or bed or into/out of the van. Other than that, he is doing just fine. Here he is enjoying a treat…

Jump! and Shadow of a shadow

For a “stop action” challenge on the Assignment 52 group

Jump! 12/52 for Assignment 52

Despite the forecast I heard for overcast skies, we have very few clouds today! And it was in the low 40’s. Downright balmy compared to my last outdoor shoot 🙂

I set my camera to daylight, and shutter priority, then set the speed to 1/1600 (actually I tried a few lower speeds before 1600, but those were blurred- yes, my dog is very fast!) Camera chose ISO 250, which gave some grain that I was able to remove most of in post processing. F4.8 It still looks a bit blurry to me, but I’m not sure if that’s from movement or poor focusing. I wasn’t using a tripod, so I just set the focal length manually to infinity, but when it gets warmer, I might have to play around with that and see if I can improve the focus.

To set up this shot (and the several it took to get it). I put my dog on a stay to my left, tossed his ball to my right and when I was ready, I cued him to jump. Then I tried to capture him OVER the jump. This shot is just a titch early, but by the time I got it I was freezing so this is what I’m happy with 🙂 I got a better timed shot with him directly over the jump and his back horizontal, but it was at a slower shutter speed and it’s blurred. 😦

I also would have prefered better lighting on his face, but in order to get a good background, this is how/where I had to position the jump. I tried having him jump the other way (turned the jump around) and it didn’t seem to help much. I tried from the other side too, it was only marginally better lighting and the background wasn’t as nice (and neither was my timing for the jump).

Shadow of a Shadow

Shadow of a shadow 12/52

This shot is an imitation of the style “mirror Image” that I have seen in other photos of other subjects.

This shot was not only mirrored, but rotated, which gives the illusion that one shadow is standing and casting another shadow. I haven’t seen this before, just happened upon it when I was playing around with the image and rotating it.

I had originally thought I could just get a photo of Dazzle’s shadow by standing next to him facing his side and getting only the shadow in the frame, but DUH, that put MY shadow in the frame!! 🙂 So I had to take the shadow from the front, which is why his rear looks smaller than his front.

I also had the challenge of playing peek-a-boo with the sun between the thick clouds that were rolling in. I had about 10 sec to get the shot after I got him set up at the correct angle to the sunlight. I wanted to get a better angle on his shadow (from higher, to minimize the perspective issues) but now the clouds completely cover the sky.

Catching up

It’s been too long since I posted an update on my blogs. I have been busy taking photos, though most are not of dogs, so they will only show up on my other blog: http://photogwithoutadog.wordpress.com/ which I’ll be updating next.

The 12 Months for Dogs group had an extra challenge last month. The goal was to manipulate a photo taken last month for the challenge to make it look like it was painted by a well known artist. I picked Monet and you can see the result above.

I also took a shot at Salvador Dali style, which is really NOT my style, but it was kind of fun to do this from photos I have taken. But it doesn’t count for the challenge because the photos were not taken during the challenge month and weren’t taken specifically for the challenge.

On March 6th, we had about 4-5″ of snow, but it drifted to deeper in some places in the yard:

Running just for the joy of it:

The interesting thing about this snowfall is that it was damp, but still light enough to pile onto and stick to the trees. I knew there were some great photo ops, so I headed to the park (thankfully the neighbor plowed the road) 🙂 Dazzle enjoyed his romp in the woods and I could tell by the single set of tracks that went in and out of the trail that we had it to ourselves.

I have many more snow shots on my other blog

I was hoping the snow on the 6th would be the last of the season, but we got more last night and today. I tried to get photos of Dazzle catching snow flakes last night, but had issues with lighting. If he was close enough to get lit by the flash, it was blowing out the light parts of his coat. And if he was far enough away for that to not happen, the photos were dark and blurry. Oh well, you can still see his joy. This is two photos combined:

OK Dazzle, stop doing the snow dance, I’m ready for Spring!
